Short reviews of books on Evangelism and Apologetics

I guess if you asked most Christians what they find hardest as they seek to live out the Christian life, they would probably answer, ‘Sharing my faith with non-believers.’ It can be one of those areas that we either feel ill-equipped to do, or would rather leave to the ‘experts’. Fear of saying the wrong thing, misrepresenting our beliefs, being worried about others’ reactions, or even fear of ridicule and antagonistic responses, are likely to be high on the list of reasons for being reticent about being open about our faith – let alone being proactive in sharing the gospel.

Here is a round-up of some of the latest books being published along this theme; from understanding the gospel and how it answers many of today’s issues and questions, to biographies recounting the stories of those who have come to Christ; from help with personal evangelism to church outreach resources.

Always Good News - Scott Lothery
Here’s a helpful little book that reminds us of what the gospel is all about, giving us a platform to start from. Starting with Jesus (the subject of the gospel), it takes the reader through exactly what Jesus has done for us, why it’s important to understand it correctly, and how we should then be compelled to share the good news with others.

Evidence for Jesus - John & Sean McDowell
A cut-down version of the best-seller, Evidence That Demands a Verdict, focusing on the second part of that volume, and specifically the evidence for Jesus. This is a really useful tool to equip the reader to answer questions about who Jesus was, and respond to scepticism about his life and ministry, his death and resurrection, with conviction.

Pray and Go - Thom Rainer
This book is a great idea – a simple premise, but with potentially profound results. It does what it says on the tin; over 30 days you are simply encouraged to pray, and go. Prayer is essential for evangelism, and this book gives a prayer focus for each day to challenge, encourage and prepare readers to fulfil the great commission.

Teatime Discipleship - Sally Clarkson
Don’t be confused by the title – it could very easily be called Teatime Evangelism too! A beautifully illustrated book with the focus on simply sharing tea with a friend, neighbour or acquaintance, but being intentional in bringing the topic of conversation around gently to talk about life and share your faith in a relaxed setting.

Sharing the Gospel with a Mormon - Tony Brown
Tony Brown is a former Jehovah’s Witness with a passion for reaching those caught in New Religious Movements like Mormonism. This little book is a great guide covering, not only what Mormons believe and the roots of their movement, which is interesting in itself, but how to go about starting conversations and sharing the true gospel with them.

Refresh - Caroline Montgomery
Refresh is another simple idea – a different perspective on toddler groups, creating a safe space for parents to come in, a place of play for their little ones, but with an intentional, short ‘thought for the day’ aimed at the parents. Refresh provides all the tools, encouragement and ideas needed for churches to start their own group.

A Second Chance - Simon Williams
Reading someone else’s story of being saved out of the darkest situations can often be a catalyst to help others find faith themselves. Simon Williams’ story of addiction and prison, and how God met him when he cried out for help, looks like an excellent read and ideal to give to someone who has experienced similar circumstances.

Chasing Proof, Finding Faith - Tom Rudelius
Another personal story – this time from a physicist who set out on a reluctant quest to find scientific proof of God’s existence, not expecting to find much. Along the way, he found reasons for faith amidst his doubts and ultimately became a Christian. A great read for believers and sceptics alike, particularly from a science vs. faith perspective.
